Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), the second-largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, was formed in 1980 through the merger of three Harvard-affiliated hospitals: Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (founded 1913), Robert Breck Brigham Hospital (founded 1914), and the Boston Hospital for Women (dating back to 1832). BWH employs over 12,000 staff including 3,000 physicians, 2,800 nurses, and more than 1,000 researchers, with 793 beds, nearly 950,000 annual outpatient visits, 46,000 annual admissions, and 54,000 emergency visits.
