Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is a hospital with a long history and is the second-largest teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. It was formed in 1980 through the merger of three Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals: Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, founded in 1913; Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, founded in 1914; and Boston Hospital for Women, which traces its origins to 1832.
The hospital has more than 12,000 employees, including 3,000 physicians, 2,800 nurses, and more than 1,000 researchers. It has 793 beds, nearly 950,000 outpatient visits annually, 46,000 inpatient admissions each year, and 54,000 emergency department visits annually.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital has become one of the world’s leading comprehensive hospitals due to its advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies and strong research capabilities. Seven Nobel Prize laureates have been associated with the hospital.
The hospital receives an average of USD 537 million in annual research funding from the National Institutes of Health, ranking among the top institutions in the United States for NIH funding.
