About Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, founded in 1947 by Dr. Sidney Farber and located in Boston, is a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. It has produced one Nobel Prize laureate in medicine and is renowned worldwide for its pioneering work in cancer gene-targeted therapy, immunotherapy, endocrine therapy, biological therapy, and cancer vaccines.
Dana-Farber's adult oncology program is among the best in the United States, and its pediatric oncology program is consistently ranked #1 nationally. The institute employs 4,000 staff and receives approximately 300,000 patient visits annually, with over 700 clinical trials available. In 1996, Dana-Farber joined with Brigham and Women's Hospital to form the Dana-Farber/Brigham Cancer Center — outpatient care at Dana-Farber, inpatient care at Brigham and Women's, connected by a skybridge.
The combined center operates 12 cancer specialties including lung, breast, gastric, esophageal, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, leukemia, multiple myeloma, neurological tumors, prostate, kidney, cervical, osteosarcoma, head and neck, skin, and melanoma. Landmark achievements include developing the first and only biomarker test (CA-125) for ovarian cancer, pioneering new methods for prostate cancer evaluation and treatment, advancing brain tumor surgery techniques, and leading selective internal radiation therapy for the liver. Under President Edward J. Benz Jr., MD, a world-renowned pediatric oncology expert, the institute continues to train the next generation of cancer physicians and improve public health worldwide.
