Kyoundo Hospital
About Kyoundo Hospital
Introduction to Kyoundo Hospital
Kyoundo Hospital was founded in 1882 during Japan’s Meiji era, making it one of the hospitals with a long and distinguished history in Japan. Located in Ochanomizu, a medical district less than three kilometers from Tokyo Station, the hospital enjoys extremely convenient transportation access. It is a comprehensive private hospital integrating medical care, education, and research.
The hospital’s name originates from the story of Dong Feng, a legendary physician in ancient China. Dong Feng, together with Zhang Zhongjing and Hua Tuo, was known as one of the “Three Divine Physicians of Jian’an.” According to legend, he did not accept payment from patients. Instead, he asked recovered patients to plant apricot trees in front of his home. Over time, the apricot trees blossomed into a cloud-like forest, and the story became widely admired.
Toyo Sasaki, the founder of the Sasaki Institute, was inspired by this story and named the hospital under the institute Kyoundo Hospital.
For more than 130 years since its establishment, the hospital has upheld the philosophy of “contributing to society through medical care by advancing medicine,” as well as the traditional virtues of medical practice. It has continuously provided patients with highly specialized medical care and compassionate, patient-respecting services.
Together with the Sasaki Institute, the hospital has continued to advance research so that more patients can “live with cancer,” devoting significant efforts to the development of cancer diagnosis and treatment methods. It has received eight nationally designated functional accreditations in Japan, as well as 13 functional designations from medical institutional societies and related organizations.
In addition, Kyoundo Hospital has experience in receiving members of the Japanese Imperial Family. It has established an integrated medical care system that covers the full pathway from comprehensive health checkups for early disease detection to surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and palliative care.
Clinical specialists within the hospital can respond quickly to abnormalities identified during examinations, providing patients with efficient and integrated medical services.
