Keio University Hospital was founded in 1920. It is a large comprehensive university hospital established by Keio University, one of Japan’s most prestigious world-class private comprehensive universities. As early as 1994, the hospital was certified as an Advanced Treatment Hospital, a designation comparable to a top-tier Grade A tertiary hospital in China.

Shibasaburo Kitasato was a world-renowned bacteriologist, Japan’s first Nobel Prize nominee, and is known as the “father of modern Japanese medicine.” His portrait also appeared on Japan’s redesigned 1,000-yen banknote issued in 2019.

Keio University Hospital is located on the Shinanomachi Campus of Keio University, which covers more than 20,000 tsubo. It is integrated with the university’s School of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care. The hospital has 31 clinical departments and 30 clinical divisions, receiving more than 3,000 outpatients and more than 800 inpatients on average each day, with an annual surgical volume exceeding 16,000 procedures.
In 2016, Keio University Hospital was designated as a Core Clinical Research Hospital. In 2018, it was certified as a Core Hospital for Cancer Genomic Medicine. In the same year, it was also selected as a model hospital for AI medicine under the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program of the Cabinet Office of Japan.
