About The Heidelberg University Hospital
Heidelberg University Hospital, located in Heidelberg, Germany, is one of Germany's leading medical centers, treating approximately 80,000 inpatients and over 1 million outpatients annually. With over 600 years of medical tradition, Heidelberg has produced 9 Nobel Prize laureates in medicine, including Albrecht Kossel (proteins and nucleic acids, 1910), Otto Meyerhof (biological energy cycles, 1922), Bert Sakmann (ion channel function, 1991), and Harald zur Hausen (HPV and cervical cancer, 2008), as well as founding pioneers of psychosomatic medicine and the internationally renowned cancer treatment center.
In Newsweek's 2020 World's Best Hospitals ranking, Heidelberg University Hospital ranked 14th globally — one of only two German hospitals in the top 20. The hospital's five key research areas are infectious diseases, cardiovascular research, neuroscience, translational and personalized oncology, and transplantation and personalized immunotherapy. Its unique research ecosystem includes close cooperation with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) — all located adjacent to each other on the Neuenheimer Feld campus.
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is Germany's national pioneer in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Since 2010, patients receive interdisciplinary care from senior specialists across different departments on a single campus. The Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center (HIT), which began operations in November 2009 under the hospital's radiation oncology department, pioneered proton and heavy ion therapy in Europe. HIT features the world's first carbon ion rotating gantry (2012) — a 600-ton device enabling ion beam delivery from any 360° angle. The hospital's Department of Neurosurgery is one of Europe's leading centers, performing over 3,200 surgeries annually (700 for brain tumors), with 74 beds including 14 intensive care beds, treating primary brain tumors, brain metastases, skull base tumors, meningiomas, spinal cord tumors, and pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors using computer-assisted navigation, modern microscopy, and fluorescence-guided tumor resection.
