About Kyoundo Hospital
Kyoundo Hospital, founded in 1882 (139 years ago) during Japan's Meiji era, is one of Japan's most historic hospitals. Located in the Ochanomizu medical district within 3 km of Tokyo Station, it is a comprehensive private hospital integrating clinical care, education, and research.
The hospital's name derives from an ancient Chinese legend of Dong Feng — one of the "Three Divine Physicians of the Jian'an Period" alongside Zhang Zhongjing and Hua Tuo — who famously treated patients without accepting payment, instead asking them to plant apricot trees by his gate. When the apricot trees blossomed into clouds of flowers, it became a celebrated story of medical virtue. Sasaki Toyo, founder of the Sasaki Foundation, was inspired by this legend and named the hospital "Kyoundo" (Apricot Cloud Hall).
For over 130 years, the hospital has upheld the philosophy of "advancing medical progress and contributing to society through healthcare," providing highly specialized, patient-respecting care. The hospital has received 8 national designations and 13 medical society accreditations from Japan. Notably, Kyoundo Hospital has experience serving the Japanese Imperial Household and offers an integrated care system spanning precision health screening for early disease detection through to surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and palliative care. Clinical specialists can rapidly address abnormalities detected during screening, providing efficient, seamless care. The hospital excels in oncology — particularly breast, ovarian, testicular, and esophageal cancers, as well as cancers of unknown primary origin — with an exceptionally high laparoscopic surgery rate of 89.9% (compared to Japan's national average of 20%).
