About Shonan Kamakura General Hospital
Shonan Kamakura General Hospital, relocated to a new facility in Kamakura's Okamoto district in September 2010, is a comprehensive acute-care hospital with 648 beds (619 movable). The 15-story building features a rooftop helipad, an emergency department five times larger than its predecessor, and dedicated elevators connecting directly to operating theaters and catheterization laboratories.
The hospital is part of the Tokushukai Group, which operates under the philosophy that "only life is equal." The hospital adheres to core principles: open 24/7, 365 days a year, never refusing emergency patients, and never accepting gratuities from patients. It was the first hospital in Japan to receive the Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients (JMIP) certification for foreign patient services.
The hospital employs 1,713 staff including 346 physicians, 660 nurses, 48 pharmacists, and comprehensive allied health professionals. It is equipped with advanced technology including 3.0 Tesla MRI, 320-row CT, and modern radiation therapy equipment. The hospital features a disease-specific floor layout from floors 6 through 14, with cardiovascular, stroke, and obstetrics centers consolidating related examinations, treatment, and inpatient care on single floors for rapid response. Four-person rooms are equipped with refrigerators, televisions, and privacy partitions, with windows at bed height for patients to enjoy outside views. The second-floor International Medical Service Office provides dedicated foreign patient coordination, and the hospital has implemented multilingual signage (English, Chinese, French, Russian) throughout the facility.
