About Keio University Hospital
Keio University Hospital, founded in 1920, is the teaching hospital of Keio University — one of Japan's most prestigious private comprehensive universities. It was designated as a Special Functioning Hospital (equivalent to a Grade A tertiary hospital in China) as early as 1994.
Keio University was established in 1858 by two towering figures: Fukuzawa Yukichi, Japan's renowned thinker and educator whose portrait appears on the 10,000 yen banknote, and Kitasato Shibasaburo, the world-famous bacteriologist and Japan's first Nobel Prize candidate known as the "Father of Modern Japanese Medicine," whose portrait graces the 2019 1,000 yen note. Over 160 years, Keio has produced 8 Nobel Prize laureates in medicine, 3 Japanese Prime Ministers, and 2 astronauts, and ranks #9 globally among universities whose graduates lead Fortune 500 companies.
Located on a 66,000+ square meter campus in Shinjuku, Tokyo, the hospital houses 31 clinical departments and 30 treatment divisions, averaging 3,000+ daily outpatient visits, 800+ inpatients, and over 16,000 annual surgeries. Designated as a Core Clinical Research Hospital (2016), a Cancer Genomic Medicine Core Hospital (2018), and an AI Medical Institution Model Hospital under Japan's Cabinet Office Strategic Innovation Program (2018), Keio has achieved numerous medical breakthroughs: the world's first living-donor liver transplant for a child with congenital heart disease (2009), the world's first inner-ear cell regeneration surgery for hearing loss (2013), elucidating the mechanism of gastric cancer cell proliferation (2018), and the world's first successful uterus transplantation resulting in live birth in a primate model (2020).
