About St. Luke's International Hospital
St. Luke's International Hospital, founded in 1901 in Tokyo, has served patients for over a century guided by the vision of its American founder, missionary physician Dr. Rudolf Bolling Teusler: "Christian love can eliminate suffering, relieve pain, and make people feel reborn. To bring this great power to all patients, I established this hospital full of vitality."
In 2020, Newsweek ranked St. Luke's as Japan's #1 comprehensive hospital. The hospital continuously improves quality through patient feedback, surveying over 100 service quality indicators since 2005. In 2015, the OECD's review of Japanese healthcare quality praised these efforts, and the hospital received the International Hospital Federation President's Award. In 2017, St. Luke's recorded 638,000 outpatient visits and 176,000 inpatient admissions, including over 30,000 international patients from 136 countries. Patient satisfaction reached 93.8% for outpatients and 95.7% for inpatients.
As a member of the Tokyo Oncology Alliance, St. Luke's has a sister hospital agreement with MD Anderson Cancer Center, and most of its oncology physicians have studied in the United States — a rarity among Japanese hospitals. The hospital is also a pioneer in Japanese precision health screening (ningen dock), led by the late Dr. Hinohara Shigeaki — Honorary President of St. Luke's, Visiting Professor at Harvard, and the first Asian to serve as President of the International Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hinohara was a foundational figure in modern Japanese medicine, establishing Japan's first precision health screening facility at a private hospital. St. Luke's remains a beacon of compassionate, evidence-based, internationally-oriented care.
