About Cancer Institute Hospital of JFCR
The Cancer Institute Hospital of JFCR, whose parent organization — the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research (JFCR) — was founded in 1908, has over 100 years of history as Japan's pioneering cancer treatment institution. The hospital itself has over 70 years of history and is Japan's oldest dedicated cancer hospital. Since its establishment, guided by the mission of "overcoming cancer to benefit humanity," the hospital has continuously advanced cutting-edge cancer treatment technology and driven innovation in cancer care both in Japan and worldwide.
In Japanese medical rankings, the Cancer Institute Hospital consistently ranks #1 across multiple cancer categories, making it one of Japan's leading cancer treatment centers. It is particularly world-renowned in digestive system cancer surgery. The hospital has 700 beds, with 9,188 new patients and 16,017 new admissions in 2013. It performs over 7,000 surgeries annually — the highest number among Japanese cancer hospitals — with particularly outstanding volumes in gastric cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.
The hospital's surgeons are among the most renowned in Japan. In digestive system cancers and head and neck cancers, the hospital has successfully operated on cases deemed inoperable by other institutions. Surgical outcomes for urological, uterine, ovarian, and lung cancers are among the best in Japan. The hospital emphasizes minimally invasive approaches — particularly laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery for gastric, colorectal, and lung cancers — reducing trauma and improving post-treatment quality of life. For advanced cancers with possible lymph node metastasis, the hospital performs radical lymph node dissection (a technique not yet widely practiced in the West), significantly improving survival rates. The hospital has treated over 1,000 international cancer patients — the highest volume among Japanese cancer hospitals — and many physicians speak English with 24-hour telephone interpretation available.
