About Children's National Hospital
Introduction to Children’s National Hospital
Children’s National Hospital was founded in 1870 and is located in Washington, D.C. When it first opened, the hospital had only 12 beds and was established to care for orphans from the American Civil War. Today, with a history of more than 150 years, Children’s National Hospital has 323 beds and more than 600 full-time pediatric specialists, making it one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the United States.
Each year, U.S. News & World Report, one of the three major news magazines in the United States, updates and publishes its Best Hospitals rankings to provide medical reference information for patients around the world.
In the 2020–2021 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings released by U.S. News & World Report in 2020, Children’s National Hospital ranked No. 7 overall among children’s hospitals in the United States. Its neonatology program ranked No. 1 in the nation for the fourth consecutive year.
Its specialties ranked among the top 10 included Neonatology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Cancer, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, and Diabetes & Endocrinology. The hospital demonstrates exceptionally high standards in pediatric care and patient medical services.
In addition, Children’s National Hospital has been actively leading innovative solutions to pediatric health challenges. It is the seventh-ranked children’s hospital in the United States in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health.
The hospital’s Research & Innovation Campus is a dedicated pediatric research and innovation center that brings together public and private partners to translate scientific breakthroughs into new treatments and technologies that benefit children. In February 2021, the campus welcomed its first resident institution, the Rare Disease Institute.
