About Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Penn Medicine was founded in 1751 and is home to the first hospital in the United States. The medical center has a dedicated and highly talented team, with all members committed to providing the best possible care for patients in the communities they serve.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, also known as HUP, is the largest hospital within Penn Medicine. HUP is a busy inpatient center for multiple specialties, including cancer, neuroscience, and cardiac care. It is also the oldest university-affiliated teaching hospital in the United States and home to the Pavilion project, the largest capital project in the history of the University of Pennsylvania, which opened in 2021.

Medical Research
Researchers at Penn Medicine have received nearly USD 1.1 billion in research funding. They take an interdisciplinary approach to better understand the fundamental mechanisms of disease and other factors that affect health, with the goal of identifying the best methods for treatment and prevention.
Faculty members from dozens of institutes, centers, and departments, together with experts from the University of Pennsylvania’s 11 other schools, including specialists in informatics, bioengineering, and health policy, form interdisciplinary research teams.
In fiscal year 2022, Penn Medicine conducted 3,519 studies, enrolled 10,658 patients, had 134,572 active trial participants, and produced 773 academic and research achievements.
Cancer Center
Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center is a global leader in cancer research, patient care, and education. Penn Medicine was the first institution to develop CAR-T cell therapy and the developer of the first cancer gene therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It has conducted more than 75 cell therapy clinical trials, with more than 1,150 patients enrolled in CAR-T cell therapy clinical trials.
At the Roberts Proton Therapy Center, one of the world’s largest integrated radiation oncology treatment centers, patients receive highly precise radiation therapy designed to eradicate tumors while protecting surrounding healthy tissue and reducing many of the side effects associated with conventional radiation therapy.
Many Penn Medicine physicians also provide care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center.
