Hospital for Special Surgery, also known as HSS, was founded in 1863. It is the oldest orthopedic specialty hospital in the United States and an affiliated hospital of Weill Cornell Medical School. HSS is not only the world’s largest joint replacement center and the birthplace of total knee replacement, but also a cradle for leaders in medicine.
HSS is a world-leading academic medical center dedicated to musculoskeletal health. In the 2023–2024 U.S. News & World Report rankings, HSS was ranked No. 1 in orthopedics for the 14th consecutive year and No. 4 in rheumatology. Pioneering Research and Innovation
The HSS Research Institute consists of 20 laboratories and 300 staff members. It is dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal health through the prevention of degeneration, tissue repair, and tissue regeneration.
With state-of-the-art technology, a large patient volume, and a dedicated “bench-to-bedside” team of physicians and scientists, HSS is able to rapidly translate scientific breakthroughs into clinical applications.
The global standard for total knee replacement was developed by HSS in 1969. The HSS Global Innovation Institute was established in 2016 to explore the potential of new drugs, therapies, and medical devices.
Leadership in Radiology and Anesthesiology
HSS is one of the world’s largest academic centers for orthopedic imaging. Its radiologists have developed new diagnostic imaging protocols for bones, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues, including MRI techniques for metal implants and cartilage.
HSS anesthesiologists are internationally recognized leaders in regional anesthesia. This technique, pioneered by HSS, has been shown to reduce bleeding, decrease postoperative pain, and shorten surgical time. Most importantly, the use of regional anesthesia can reduce the risk of surgical infection by 50%.
Training Tomorrow’s Leaders
Every HSS physician holds a teaching appointment at Weill Cornell Medical School. HSS has one of the most sought-after orthopedic residency programs. Among its more than 500 graduates, over 400 hold positions in major orthopedic departments, many of them serving as department chiefs.
